SUSTAINABLE FINANCING

RESOURCES

A National Biodiversity and Climate Fund has been launched, funded through a grant from the Global Environment Facility, and implemented by UNDP in partnership with CEPA.

The mission of the PNG Biodiversity and Climate Fund is to catalyze financial and technical resources to enable present and future generations of Papua New Guineans to protect the country’s biodiversity and build resilience in the face of climate change.

FINANCING PROTECTED AREAS

  1. Less than 15% of the existing 62 protected areas currently receive any financial support.
  2.  Total financing currently available for protected areas is estimated at USD $3.3 million from all funding sources.
  3. To meet the funding requirements for the current system of protected areas, an additional USD $9 million is required annually. It costs approximately USD $2.80 per hectare for effective conservation in PNG.
  4. PNG has completed its first national protected area finance and investment plan that provides a roadmap for financing the expanded systems to meet international targets.

PROTECTED AREAS NETWORK

The sustainable financing of Papua New Guinea’s protected area network project will extend the government of PNG’s ability to fulfil its protected area mandate and implement the protected area policy. It achieves this by supporting the government to:

  • Secure stable and long-term financial resources for the management of protected areas across the country;
  • Ensure that these financial resources are allocated to contribute to improving management effectiveness of the protected areas across the country; and,
  • Ensure that they are managed cost-effectively and efficiently with respect to their conservation and other complementary development objectives.

The project’s objective is to reduce the funding gap for Papua New Guinea’s protected areas in order to improve their management effectiveness, and livelihoods of their communal landowners. The project is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, in partnership with the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority, through funding from the Global Environment Facility.

Guide to Business Planning for Protected Areas in PNG

The Guide to Business Planning for Protected Areas in Papua New Guinea is designed to assist any organisation, whether a formally registered non-government organisation (NGO), a community-based organisation (CBO), or any other group, business or organisation directly involved and committed to the management, maintenance and/or conservation of a protected area in PNG.

This guide has been developed as an extension to the training course ‘Business Planning for Protected Areas Capacity Building’ which was delivered 8-9 June, 2022 at the Hilton Hotel, Port Moresby, PNG as hosted by the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) and supported in partnership by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with funding from the Global Environment Facility.

Making Natures Values Visible

Papua New Guinea’s economy relies heavily on its natural environment. The terrestrial environment supports the livelihoods of 80% of the population, and the coastal and marine environment provides food security, livelihoods, and protection from erosion. The natural environment also provides services that benefit the productive sector, such as regulating water quantity and providing nurseries for fish populations.
