SUSTAINABLE FINANCING OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA'S PROTECTED AREA NETWORK

UNDP PARTNERS WITH WILDLIFE CONSERVATION SOCIETY TO SUPPORT PROTECTED AREA EXPANSION IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed an agreement today to support the protection of over three million hectares worth of land and marine area in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for communities to manage their resources for future generations.
UNDP together with Conservation and Environmental Protection Authority (CEPA), signed an agreement with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to support the conservation actions in Kimbe Bay, Sepik Wetlands and Mt. Wilhelm. The four-year initiative is implemented under the Sustainable Financing of Protected Areas in PNG project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The partnership aims to substantially expand PNG’s Protected Area system and develop sustainable financing options that contribute to the effective management of its biodiversity and community livelihoods.
“This agreement represents an opportunity for PNG to significantly expand its Protected Area system and demonstrate that financial resources can be mobilized at a local level for both conservation and community livelihoods. Our hope is that these pilot sites, representing different ecosystem types, can act as models that can be scaled up and replicated across the country” stated Mr. Edward Vrkic, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative.

The project: Sustainable Financing of Papua New Guinea’s Protected Area Network, is being undertaken by PNG’s Conservation and Environment Protection Authority in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, through funding from the Global Environment Facility.
